We will pray for you and your prayer request at our prayer meetings, and through the week in our personal prayers.

What is prayer?

Prayer is the opening of the heart to God as to a friend. Prayer is the life of the soul, the foundation of spiritual growth. Prayer is the breath of the soul. It is the secret of spiritual power. No other means of grace can be substituted, and the health of the soul be preserved. Prayer brings the heart into immediate contact with the Well-spring of life, and strengthens the sinew and muscle of the religious experience.

Why do some prayers go unanswered?

But why is it that so many prayers are never answered? David says, "I cried unto Him with my mouth, and he was extolled with my tongue. If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me." (Ps 66:17, 18) By another prophet the Lord gives us the promise, "Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart." (Jer 29:13) Again, he speaks of some who "have not cried unto me with their heart." (Hos 7:14) Such petitions are prayers of form, lip-service only, which the Lord does not accept.

A sincere heart brings answered prayer

Every sincere prayer that is offered is mingled with the efficacy of Christ's blood. If the answer is deferred, it is because God desires us to show a holy boldness in claiming the pledged word of God. He is faithful who hath promised. He will never forsake the soul who is wholly surrendered to Him.

The prayer that Nathanael offered came from a sincere heart, and it was heard and answered by the Master. The Lord reads the hearts of all, and "the prayer of the upright is His delight." (Prov 15:8) He will not be slow to hear those who open their hearts to Him, not exalting self, but sincerely feeling their weakness and unworthiness.

What should we bring to Jesus in prayer?

We should go to Jesus and tell Him all our needs. We may bring Him our little cares and perplexities as well as our greater troubles. Whatever arises to disturb or distress us, we should take it to the Lord in prayer. We lose many precious blessings by failing to bring our needs and cares and sorrows to our Saviour. He is the wonderful Counsellor.

Pray earnestly, Wait on the Lord, But do not doubt

We can never weary Christ by earnest supplications. Do not cease to pray. If the answer tarry, wait for it. Lay all your plans at the feet of the Redeemer. Talk faith and courage while waiting for God. Be afraid to doubt, lest this become a habit that will destroy faith. Oh, how precious is Jesus to the soul who trusts in Him! But many are walking in darkness because they bury their faith in the shadow of Satan. Never for a moment should we allow Satan to think that his power to distress and annoy is greater than the power of Christ to uphold and strengthen. . . .
